Episode #39 - Celtic Latitudes

So what is Celtic music? Celtic music draws connections to the early cultures of the British Isles and Western Europe. The folk music revival of the 1960s with American artists like Bob Dylan was a huge impetus for the revival of Celtic music and culture. Artists, especially, throughout Britain, Ireland and France took cue and began rediscovering their own roots and unearthed exciting traditions spanning back to a time before the invasions of the Romans or Anglo-Saxons. Soon musicians everywhere were picking up the “illun pipes,” Bodhran, flutes and whistles, fiddles and the bouzouki and igniting the music of the ancients in a modern world. This playlist leads us on a journey throughout the Celtic diaspora. We’ll begin in the British Isles with tunes from Ireland, Wales and Scotland. After that we’ll jump down to Brittany and Galicia. Finally, we’ll cross the Atlantic to the Canadian Maritimes where the legacy of Celtic culture is alive and kicking in Cape Breton and Prince Edward Island. One artist, who I’ve come to discover as of late, who was a key player in the Celtic music renaissance of early 70s is Alan Stivell. Stivell is a musician and singer from Brittany, a Northwest province of France that has survived for centuries as a bastion of Celtic culture. He modernized traditional Breton music and singing in the Breton language. Many consider his music to be the precursor for Celtic Rock. David Bowie was not a chameleon. He was an artistic mutant, one planet ahead of his fellow homo sapiens. Drawing influence from avant-garde art, theatre and even science fiction. He fused fashion and identity in a way that transcended the work of other rock musicians of his generation So much of what we experience today in pop culture is derived from Bowie’s career and the family of musicians and producers with whom he worked. From sharing a flat and writing songs with Iggy Pop to studio production with Brian Eno. Electronic explorations with Trent Reznor to funk odysseys with Nile Rodgers. His philosophy and approach to performance continues to be evident in the work of artists like Bono, Lady Gaga, Marilyn Manson, Gary Numan, Robyn Hitchcock and many many more.

When an artist transcends their country, their culture, their planet…. to me, that’s an indication of brilliance. Bowie’s continual transformations and outside approach connect to the core of the human experience. Musicians across the world have interpreted his songs since the beginning.

Episode #20 - American Folk Festival Preview

The American Folk Festival in Bangor, ME is coming up fast. Next weekend (Aug. 28th, 29th and 30th) the Queen City’s waterfront will be transformed into a cultural festival presenting music, dance and other performing arts from across America and the world. Plus there’s food... a variety of regional, ethnic and good ol’ fair food. The event is free of charge (of course donations are kindly accepted) and family friendly - providing lots to do and see for the youngsters in your life. As the host of Sonic Latitudes, I’ll be attending the festival (with my media pass) which will give me access to the artists and my goal is to bring back interviews and new sounds for a show that will air on Sunday September, 6. Today’s show is gonna be my Folk Festival preview. I’ve put together a playlist of artists who will hit the stage next weekend and standout artists who’ve appeared at the festival in years past. The next 30 minutes will spotlight some of these past artists. Then, around the top of the hour, I’ll focus on this year’s artists.
