David Bowie was not a chameleon. He was an artistic mutant, one planet ahead of his fellow homo sapiens. Drawing influence from avant-garde art, theatre and even science fiction. He fused fashion and identity in a way that transcended the work of other rock musicians of his generation So much of what we experience today in pop culture is derived from Bowie’s career and the family of musicians and producers with whom he worked. From sharing a flat and writing songs with Iggy Pop to studio production with Brian Eno. Electronic explorations with Trent Reznor to funk odysseys with Nile Rodgers. His philosophy and approach to performance continues to be evident in the work of artists like Bono, Lady Gaga, Marilyn Manson, Gary Numan, Robyn Hitchcock and many many more.
When an artist transcends their country, their culture, their planet…. to me, that’s an indication of brilliance. Bowie’s continual transformations and outside approach connect to the core of the human experience. Musicians across the world have interpreted his songs since the beginning.
This show explores the many interpretations of Bowie’s music. Welcome to Bowie World.
